Discover Elain Lim’s world of mindful, creative reuse using expired makeup

Elain Lim is a celebrity makeup artist with nearly 30 years of experience. She has worked with international celebrities including Jeanette Aw, JJ Lin, Tanya Chua, Stefanie Sun, Maria Sharapova, and Kang Dong-won. A graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Elain has always nurtured a deep love for art, debuting her first exhibition Selves in 2017 at The Fabulous Baker Boy.

An advocate for reducing waste in the beauty industry, she began experimenting with expired makeup during the pandemic - repurposing them as painting mediums instead of discarding them. Today, she transforms what was once waste into whimsical, emotionally resonant artworks. This creative pivot sparked a new chapter in her practice, leading to solo exhibitions, group showcases at Art Busan and Art Taichung, and live fashion illustration events with brands like Dior, Roger Vivier, and Manolo Blahnik.

Her advice for aspiring upcyclists? “Be curious. Let your inner child play.” Whether working on faces or canvases, Elain’s artistry is a joyful celebration of colour, emotion, and reinvention.

Explore how Elain brings the roving art studio Y.W.B.I.T - From Palette to Palette to life - turning beauty waste into art, action, and inspiration.

    “Athena” by Elain Lim Image

    “Athena” by Elain Lim

Crafted over a month, Athena is a 24” x 30” portrait that brings together over a dozen expired palettes in matching tones - painstakingly sourced from fellow makeup artists.

Discarded eyeliners were used to define its bold lines, while expired glitter shadows added the soft, radiant glow. Every detail reflects Elain’s commitment to intentional creation, showing that beauty waste can be transformed into brilliance.

“Summer Solstice” by Elain Lim Image

    “Summer Solstice” by Elain Lim

This 24” x 24” dreamscape was painted entirely with expired makeup, including eyeliners and eyeshadows. Created during the 2024 solstice in a heritage home, the artwork blends memory with modernity.

While working on the piece, the canvas accidentally tore when it fell. Instead of starting over, Elain repaired it by embedding a microchip and diamante into the damaged spot, turning the damage into design. The result is a poetic nod to resilience, duality, and the art of adaptation, reminding us that true beauty doesn’t start with perfection.

More inspiring artworks await at Y.W.B.I.T - From Palette to Palette roving exhibitions.

  • HEARTFELT CREATIONS, UP FOR BIDS

Silent Auction of stories, strength, and sustainable beauty

A special art showcase featuring works by young talents from the ComLink+ families residing in Jurong West. Mentored by artist Elain Lim, these young artists explored themes of identity, courage, and self-worth using expired makeup as their medium. Each brushstroke is an act of expression. Each piece, a reflection of becoming.

Own one through our Silent Auction

Own one of these meaningful artworks by taking part in our Silent Auction to support young artists and the community they represent. With the support of Lendlease Global Commercial REIT (LREIT), the auctioned artworks will raise funds for the Gift-A-Family (GAF) initiative, which supports the needs and aspirations of ComLink+ families residing in Jurong West.

    Here’s How It Works:

    1. Earn Tokens

Lendlease Plus Members are eligible to earn one (1) token with every S$50 nett spend in a single receipt at Jem, 313@somerset, Parkway Parade, and Paya Lebar Quarter between 10 July - 31 August 2025. Double spending is required for supermarket receipts.

    2. Place Your Bid

Lendlease Plus mobile app > Home tab > You Won’t Believe It’s Trash – From Palette to Palette > Heartfelt Creations, Up for Bids > Start Bidding

    3. Highest Bid Wins

The artwork goes to the highest token bid. In the event of a tie, the earlier bid (by timestamp) wins. Each member will win a maximum of 1 art piece.

    4. All Proceeds Go to Gift-A-Family (GAF) Initiative

Lendlease Global Commercial REIT (LREIT) will match the top bidder’s token value (up to S$1,000 per art piece) as a donation to Gift-A-Family (GAF) Initiative.

    • The Gift-A-Family (GAF) initiative is a social innovation under ComLink+ @ Jurong West, co-developed by the Social Service Office @ Boon Lay in collaboration with Boon Lay Grassroots Organisations and the Boon Lay Constituency Office.
